THE FILM

One Man, One Island, 40 Summers, The Arctic

Each summer, a tiny cabin on remote Cooper Island Alaska, is biologist George Divoky’s home. It is surrounded by a colony of seabirds that have become his resaerch assistants and spies across the Beaufort Sea. In an amazing feat of dedication, Divoky has returned every breeding season for 40 years to monitor their progress. Forced to land by the lack of sea ice, for the last five years he has witnessed the arrival of a new island residents, polar bears. They are a dramatic indication of the rapidly evolving climate of the Arctic and a constant danger to this lone researcher.

Our film follows George to Cooper Island in this remote corner of the Arctic and into the world of this charismatic explorer. We follow the compelling story of this man’s dedication and the unintended revelations that he discovers, undeniable evidence of climate change that is impacting the whole planet.

Although the effects of climate change are global, the polar regions have been impacted most dramatically. With the Arctic providing the backdrop to our story, we visit the frontline of global climate change, which ironically is the focus of the oil industry in their hunt for new deep water drilling locations.

The simple story of this one man, his Arctic outpost and the animals he studies, illustrate a chaotic future now facing the rest of North America as well as the entire planet.
